Hockey Handshakes - More than a Gesture

Hockey Handshakes - More than a Gesture

IHSA

In South Australia, as with most Australian Ice Hockey associations, we love the tradition of the end of game Hockey Handshake.

After IHSA Hockey League games players, officials, and coaching staff traditionally line up to shake hands, and importantly some also make the effort to go and thank the scoring crew! Why do we do this? Sportsmanship and hockey culture are at the core of our association. It is a game, and this is our way to show respect to each other, as well as "leaving the game on the ice".

Our ByLaws now state:
In the spirit of healthy competition, each team (including bench staff) and game officials will participate in the end of game “handshake” tradition. Participation is voluntary, however once you elect to participate, it must be completely.

Read a little more about this tradition below:
"Hockey has long been a sport of honor and respect, and the handshake has been a symbol of that for decades. After every hockey game, players line up and shake hands, but what does this gesture really mean? Beyond just a friendly gesture, the handshake has a deep significance in sportsmanship and hockey culture. It is an important part of the game and a tradition that should be passed down from generation to generation so that young hockey players understand the importance of respect for their opponents. "
