The Adelaide Tigers have eliminated the Adelaide Jokers in two games in the Senior A League Best of Three Finals Series played last week at Thebarton.

The Tigers won the opening game 6-0 and that dominance carried over into the second game when they blanked the Green Machine again this time by a score of 2 -0.

Unfortunately the Jokers were without the services of their leader and top point scorer Sami Mantere, who missed both games due to illness. His absence was very noticeable in the Jokers team play, and overall morale. The Tigers skated to victories in both games without a goal scored against.

The Tigers will now advance to the Grand Final Series against the Minor Premiers the Adelaide Blackhawks in a Best of Three series starting on Saturday 23 September at the Ice Arena.

In game two, both clubs skated through a scoreless first period, with the Tigers out-shooting the Jokers 15 - 4. Goalkeeper Jeremy Friederich made several key saves in the opening period to keep his team in the game.

The Tigers outshot the Jokers 30 - 13 during the game with Friederich making 28 saves in the Jokers goal, while Sam O’Neill earned the shutout stopping 13 shots for the Tigers.

Andy Young on a pass from captain Eric Lien and Ketih Gilmour got the Tigers on the board in the second period, and then the third Jason Nordin fired the Tigers second goal, enough to give the Black n’ Gold the two goal victory and the series win.

“ It was great to see the Jokers put together a good run and get in to the play-offs as it will bode well for them in the future.” said  Lien after the second game win.

Lien says he and his team mates were inspired by the win over the Jokers, after losing the battle for first place to the Blackhawks in the final weeks of the schedule.

"There was no way anyone could have predicted the final three teams; we stumbled in to the play-offs while both the Jokers and Blackhawks were riding long winning streaks.”

For us we would have liked to finish first overall but in actual fact the two games against the Jokers has helped our confidence immensely as we were able to move past a good team with all 15 players contributing. “ said Lien (pictured)

In the Game One 6 - 0 win, Andy Young and Tim Moran notched two goals each, with singles coming off the sticks of Ryan O’Handley, and Drew Maltby.

Once again the Tigers showed total control in the opening game outshooting the Jokers 34 - 11.

Sam O’ Neill  registered two shutouts, despite having a much lower shots on goal total. Friederich stopped 28 shots for the Jokers in the loss.

The Tigers will be up against one of their main nemesis this season when they meet the Blackhawks in the Grand Final starting Saturday night.

In their four meetings this season the Blackhawks defeated the Tigers three times, the only loss was in the final game of the season in which the Tigers won in a shootout, a loss that gave the Hawks the minor premiership.

“Not allowing odd man opportunities, keeping them to under 20 shots a game, and not allowing a goal against over the two games shows us we can play good team defence and that will be important in the next series.” Lien said in the lead up to the opening game.

In order to beat the Hawks, Lien says there are a several factors the Tigers will need to carry out to win.

“We have to ensure we play proper hockey in all three zones: If we don’t battle in their end they simply will not allow us to get pucks to the net. If we don’t control the puck through the neutral zone we will spend a lot of energy chasing them and the puck. And If we don’t man up in our end we will allow a team with good offensive firepower too many opportunities. “

Game One will be played this Saturday afternoon 23 September starting at 3:45pm.
