MOELLER'S OVERTIME WINNER A THROWBACK TO AN EARLIER ERA

September 3, 2017

Senior C  League - Round 21 - Game 1

Falcons 4 - Tigers 3 - OT Shootout

It’s been a long time since Steve Moeller  (pictured left with longtime Falcon Ric Dent) has bellowed the Falcons club song as a player, but he did just that after he came out of retirement and scored the winning goal in a 4 - 3 Overtime Shootout victory against the Adelaide Tigers in Senior C League action last Sunday at Thebarton.

After almost a quarter of a century out of the game, the Falcons Senior C coach  was called upon to dig his gear out of storage and fill in as a last minute replacement for his undermanned lineup. Little did he realise he would play such an important role in the team’s win.

The Falcons jumped out to an early 1 - 0 lead when Dan Waterman opened the scoring late in the first period.

Jamie Lewis then tied the game for the Tigers early into the second frame, when he fired an unassisted marker at 19:35.

High scoring Will Dobud then gave the Tigers the lead when he was successful on a pass from Jordan Green.

Dan Riding scored the first of his two goals late into the second period and both clubs went to the break all tied at 2 - 2.

In the third period Riding put the Falcons ahead but then the Tigers' Nathan Price tied the game with just over five minutes to go in the game, the game ending in a draw, and on to the shoot out.

“ My skating and overall game fitness may be lacking after so many years away from playing, but I still have my shot”  Moeller said after the game.

Moeller ( inset - pictured) certainly is a throwback to a bygone area, having started his hockey during the Payneham, S.A. Ice Centre era, regarded by many as the nostalgic years of the sport here in South Australia.

Both teams went through their lineup of shooters in the overtime showdown, and the score was still deadlocked.  That meant the order of shooters could be random after the first  round.

After scoring in the first round, Moeller then decided to put his hand up to shoot again. On his second try, he could see the opposition goalie looking him in the eye as he skated toward the goal, so he decided to shoot from the slot area, beating Chris Moreton, the Tigers goalie to the bottom right hand corner and sending the Falcons bench into a chorus of victory cheers.

“It felt good to contribute” he said. “This team may not finish that well in the standings, but over the last four games, we've been playing well. The win in the shoot out over a team as good as the Tigers was a big team effort”.

The Falcons outshot the Tigers 38 - 32 with Lachlan Johnson stopping 29 shots to earn the win for the Falcons, while Moreton stopped 34 of 39 shots in the overtime loss for the Tigers.

The victory improved the Falcons season mark to 3 - 13 - 1 - 0 for fifth spot on the ladder while the Tigers are alone in second spot with 10 - 5 - 0 - 1 record.
