WINGS QUICK START BURIES THE BLACKHAWKS
Senior A League - Round 20 - Game 1
Redwings 10 - Blackhawks 3
The Adelaide Redwings got a quick jump off the blocks and then coasted to a 10 - 3 win over the Adelaide Blackhawks in Round 20 Senior A League action last Sunday at Thebarton.
The Wings’ leading scorer Reggie Mattchoss opened the scoring less than a minute into the game and from there the Big Red line up never looked back.
Tamir Dunning (pictured), Jeff Pellerin, Cameron Pope, and Trevor Walsh all scored two goals to lead the offensive attack, while Mattchoss and Peter Migless added single goals.
The Wings scored three in both the first and second periods to carry a commanding six goal lead into the final period.
The Blackhawks then fought back with two opening goals in the final period, but the Redwings then scored two goals in less than a minute just after the midway point in the period to smother the Hawks rally.
Dave Hancock, Paul Joyce, and Mike Gainer scored goals for the Tribe, who earlier in the week had won an inspiration victory over the first place Tigers, but the lopsided loss to the Wings leaves the A League Premiership up for grabs.
The Redwings out-shot the Blackhawks 37 - 18, with Wings’ goalie Jo Phillis stopping 15 shots to earn the victory for her side, while the Blackhawks’ Charlie Wragg blocked 27 in the loss.
The victory was a morale boosting effort for the Wings who have floundered in the final two months of the schedule. They currently sit in fourth place on the ladder, one point back of the Jokers and the final playoff spot, but they have three games remaining left to grab the last finals spot.
In the Round 20 Game 2, the Jokers defeated the Falcons 4 - 2, giving them 23 points, and third position on the ladder, one point in front of the Wings, who improved to 7 - 7 - 0 - 1 for 22 points. The Hawks dropped to 8 - 7 - 1 - 1 for 27 points, in second place, one point back of the first place Tigers.
The Wings have three games remaining in the schedule, while the Jokers, Blackhawks and Tigers have two games left. The fifth placed Falcons 5 - 9 - 2 - 1 -2 0 points have only one game left in the fixture and have been eliminated from qualifying for the finals.
