CRITCHLOW AND CREW FIGHT BACK TO BEAT TIGERS

August 23, 2017

Premier  League -  Round 8 - Game 2

Falcons 9 - Tigers 6

What was intended to be a replay of an earlier suspended match turned out to be Cam Critchlow Night last week at the Ice Arena.

The Canadian star scored five goals and added two assists to lead the Adelaide Falcons to a 9-6 romp over the Adelaide Tigers in a Round 8 Premier League game last Wednesday.

The game was a makeup game from an match that was previously suspended due to poor ice conditions back in May, but it also proved to be a preview of what supporters can expect to see when both sides face off in the Premier League Semi Final Series starting next week.

Aside from Critchlow being a one man wreaking crew, Cole MacMillan, Dylan Pope, Jayson James, and Henry Keane added singles to complete the Falcons' offensive assault.

The win lifted Big Blue's season mark to 9 - 8 - 1 - 0 and a second place finish with 29 points in the four team Premier division. The Falcons finished in last place the previous season.

James Keane and  Jamie Holland led the Tigers with two goals each, with Kayne Fedor, and Keith Gilmour adding one goal each.

The seven points moved Critchlow (pictured) into fourth position on the Premier League Scoring ladder with 24 goals and 25 assists in just 11 games. Team mate Cole MacMillan is one point ahead in third place with 50 points.

Redwing' stars' Tyler Leeming - 62 points, and Dave Gal - 60 points are currently in the top two spots.

"We didn’t have our Czech connection Ales (Kratoska) and Joey (Rezek) and being a game where finals positions were not on the line , I wanted to give some of young players some extra ice time before finals.” explained Falcons coach John Botterill (pictured).

“We  also knew that by pushing through with three lines, we would gain an advantage later in the game. ”

The Tigers came out strong in the first period outscoring the Falcons 4 - 2, and at one stage midway into the second still held onto a two goal  lead, but that’s when the Falcons turned things around, and the Tigers seemed to run out of legs.

“They put the pressure on us early in the third and with Cam (Critchlow),  and Cole (MacMillan) stepping it up, any mistakes we made were punished quickly.” said Tigers Playing Coach Andrew Stapleton (pictured).

“Once the score was back in their favor, we started chasing and committing too much offensively leaving us open on the counter attack.

Rusty (Tigers’ goalie Brewer) did his best to keep them out but we can be much better in our own zone. Six goals should be enough to win any game.” said the Tigers skipper.

The Tigers outshot the Falcons 36 - 33 with Falcons goalie Ian Hunter making 30 saves to earn the win, while Brewer stopped 24 for the Tigers.

Both teams will open their Best of Three Premier League Semi Final Series next Wednesday 30 August at 7:45pm. The winner of the Semi Final Series will move on to meet the Minor Premier Redwings in the Grand Final.
