NO FOOLIN' - JOKERS SURPRISE SECOND PLACE HAWKS
Senior A League - Round 2 - Game 2
Jokers 4 - Blackhawks 1
Sunday night’s 4 - 1 win over the Adelaide Blackhawks is testament that the Adelaide Jokers are for real, their latest win another stride in their magical run for a playoff spot in the Senior A League.
Nathaniel Benson’s goal early into the third period proved to be the winning marker for the Jokers in their impressive victory over the second place Hawks. Sunday night’s triumph leap frogs the Jokers out of the division basement up over the sputtering Adelaide Redwings.
Benson took a setup pass from Tommy Hill (pictured) and Andrew Chen in the opening minute of the third period, to score on Hawks goalie Charlie Wragg, giving the Green Machine a two goal lead. A few minutes later, Max Zobel made it 3 - 0.
The Blackhawks finally got on the scoreboard just after the midway mark of the third when Dave Hancock converted a play from Connor Oxlad and Dylan Collier, giving some hope to the Hawks bench.
Hancock’s tally however proved one of the few highlights of the night for the Tribe whose record slipped a tiny bit to 7 - 5 - 1 - 1, but still sitting comfortably in second place with 24 points, only four points back of the first place Tigers.
Scott Palmer completed the scoring for the Jokers, netting the fourth tally with just 25 seconds left on the clock.
The latest win is another step up the ladder for the Jokers, who continue to grind it out for a postseason semi-finals spot. The Jokers record of 5 - 7 - 2 - 1-20 points, ties them for third place with the Adelaide Falcons. Both clubs are one point in front of the Redwings, (who have played one less game), and four back of the Hawks (14 GP), setting the stage for an exciting race to the finish, for three, and possibly four teams in the division.
The Jokers outshot the Blackhawks 26 - 13 with Jeremy Friederich stopping 12 of 13 shots to get the win in the Joker's goal, while Wragg stopped 22 shots for the Hawks.
The Blackhawks are back into Senior A League action Saturday 26 August when they meet the first place Adelaide Tigers in a 5pm game. Then both the Jokers and Hawks will be in action the following night Sunday 27 August, when the Blackhawks face off against the Adelaide Redwings at 3:45pm, and then the Jokers will play the Falcons at 5:15pm.
