HAWKS KEEP FINALS HOPE ALIVE WITH BIG WIN OVER FALCONS
Senior B League - Round 16 - Game 1
Blackhawks 7 - Falcons 2
The Adelaide Blackhawks kept their 2017 Senior B League finals hopes alive following an impressive 7-2 win over their rival Adelaide Falcons last week at the Ice Arena.
The victory improves the Hawks record to 3 - 13 and gives them 9 points on the ladder, only three less than the Falcons who dropped to 4 - 12 for 12 points and sitting in the third finals' placing on the ladder. With just two more rounds left in the minor round schedule, the first place Redwings (14 - 1 - 1 - 0), and the second place Tigers (11 - 5 - 0 - 1 - 1) have secured their spots in the finals so all attention now turns to the final third spot up for grabs.
The Hawks control their own destiny from here and they must continue to win and hope the Falcons lose two to give them any chance of a finals berth. Currently the Falcons hold a six goal edge in goal differential, a stat which could prove a factor in determining the third finals place, should the Hawks win one more game, and the Falcons lose both of their remaining games.
Matt Carre led the Tribe with two goals, with Chris Podger, Joshua Pfeiffer, Josh Osbourne, Phil Collier (pictured), and Shannon Collier rounding out the scoring.
Dave Castledine, and Meggie Ayris replied for the Falcons.
The Hawks came out fighting from the opening face off, opening up a four goal lead after the first two periods. Phil Collier made it 5 - 0 Hawks early into the final period, but then the Falcons hit back with two quick goals and things started to look interesting.
The Blackhawks stymied the Big Blue rally when Carre fired his second of the night, and then Shannon Collier slammed the door with only nine seconds left on the clock.
Referee Hayden Crafter handed out 28 minutes in penalties, 20 minutes to the Falcons, including a double roughing minor and then a misconduct to Jacob Symonds with only 10 seconds left in the contest.
The Blackhawks outshot the Falcons 30 - 16 with Sam Poole stopping 14 shots to earn the victory for the Tribe, while Dale Glover handled 23 shots in the loss for the Falcons.
Both sides are back in Senior B League action again this Sunday 20 August when the Falcons meet the Tigers at 7:00pm, and the Blackhawks facing off against the first place Wings in an 8:30pm match.
