Senior B League - Round 16 - Game 2
Redwings 2 - Tigers 1
Peter Boyle and Steve “Babe” Newbound combined to score the winning goal and lift the Adelaide Redwings to an exciting 2 - 1 win over the Adelaide Tigers in Senior B League action last week at the Ice Arena.
The victory improved the Wings first place record to 14 - 1 - 1 - 0 while the second place Tigers drop to 11-5-0-1. Both sides however have secured their spots in the finals series next month, with the Wings getting automatic entry to the Grand Final, and the Tigers awaiting the third place opponent as the Falcons and Blackhawks fight for the final playoff spot.
Lukas Mojzisek scored the opening goal for the Redwings on a pass from Dusan Matusica, with Mark Peacock beating the Wings’ goalie Johnny Cousins (pictured) for the Tigers lone goal.
Boyle took a nice pass from Newbound, and then took a chance by shooting on Tigers goalie Justin Ruston and it found the back of the net to give the Wings a one goal lead just past the midway point of the middle period.
Boyle’s goal proved to be the winner as both teams battled the rest of the match without any further scoring, but the Wing veteran says he took his chances but shooting from just inside the blue line on Ruston.
“We struggled in offense throughout the game and was very fortunate to spot Babe (Steve Newbound) with the puck deep in our end and the Tigers were changing. I circled inside our defensive blue line, Babe drew the first Tigers forward and then passed to myself almost at the centre line. I was thinking about a shot from inside the offensive blue line as the Tigers goal tender had mishandled a couple of longer shots during the game, however the Tigers were getting back to their zone and I was forced to shoot and I think the goaltender may have been screened slightly.” said Boyle.
The atmosphere in the Redwings dressing room after the game was just like Old Home Week, as the two Wings veterans celebrated the win after the game. The Wings have clinched the Minor Premiership in the Senior B League and following completion of the minor round schedule will have a short break until the semi-final is complete. Boyle thinks the rest will do the Wings some good.
“Whilst we have had a good season with only a couple of minor issues I feel that most of the teams would have enjoyed the standard of competition across the grade, the break will certainly help us as we have a number of player with some minor injuries as well as the Flu. If the finals are played with the same level of sportsmanship and skill as the regular season I think everybody will be happy no matter what the result.”
The Wings outshot the Tigers 22 - 15 with Johnny “Robot” Cousins blocking 14 Tigers shots to record the win for the Redwings, while Ruston stopped 20 shots in the Tigers net.
