TIGERS BEAT FALCONS TO SEND MESSAGE TO REST OF "A" LEAGUE

August 2, 2017

Senior A League - Round 17 - Game 1

Tigers 8 - Falcons 2

The Adelaide Tigers jumped out to a two goal first period lead over the Adelaide Falcons and from there the Senior A League front runners coasted to an 8 - 2 win, sending a strong message that they are the team to beat in the September IHSA Finals Series.

Offensive spark plugs Stu Henly, and Ryan O’Handley led the way for the Tigers, each notching two goals, and contributing two assists, with Eric Lien 1 goal, 2 assists, Tim Reeves, 1 goal, 2 assists, and Simon Jarrad, and Andy Young (pictured) adding one goal each.

James Hearne scored both goals for the Falcons.

Henly fired his two goals in the opening period as the Tigers pulled away to a 3 - 1 lead after 20 minutes of play. Both teams then exchanged goals in a hotly contested middle frame, but four unanswered goals in the final period put the game out of reach for the Falcons.

The Tigers have plenty of offensive growl in their tank with five of their forwards (O'Handley, Henly, Lien, Jarrad, and Seamans) in the Top Ten Senior A Points leaders, and their defense and goal keeping is among the best in the division, attributes that make them genuine contenders to win the crown in September.

The victory improves the Tigers record to 9 - 3 - 0 - 1 for 28 points and top of the ladder. The Falcons meanwhile are still very much in contention, but drop to 5 - 6 - 2 - 1 for 20 points and third place, one back of the second place Blackhawks, 21 points, and one in front of the fourth place Redwings (6 - 5 - 0 - 1) 19 points.

Tempers flared in the third period with referee Damian Smith handing out a misconduct to the Tigers’ Jason Nordin for an intentional illegal hit around the midway mark in the period. Then with just two minutes to play, the Falcons’ Reece Boundy was served with a double minor for a roughing altercation with the Tigers’ Mark Sunczyk. The scuffle drew the ire of Boundy’s team mate James Hearne, who was handed a 10 minute major for unsportsmanlike conduct.

The Tigers out-shot the Falcons 30-17 with Sam O’Neill blocking 15 of the 17 shots at his goal to record the win, while former Aussie National goalie Paul Cracknell stopped 22 of 30 in taking the loss for the Falcons.

The Falcons have a bye in the next Round 18 schedule of Senior A League games on Sunday 13 August, however the Tigers will meet the Blackhawks in a 7:00pm match, followed by the Redwings vs. Jokers match at 8:30pm.
