REDWINGS DOWN HAWKS TO MOVE CLOSER TO MINOR PREMIERSHIP
Premier League - Round 14 Game 2
Redwings 6 - Blackhawks 2
The Adelaide Redwings reduced their Minor Premiership magic number to just 2 points following their 6-2 win over the Adelaide Blackhawks in Premier League Round 14 action last week at the Ice Arena.
Team captain Trevor Walsh led the Wings scoring with two goals, with single markers coming from Morgan McNeill, Tyler Leeming, Dave Gal, and Marcel McGuiness.
Newcomer Ivan Lauton scored his fourth goal in just his second game for the Blackhawks, with Ted Fabijan adding the other Hawk tally.
“We know we can produce the offense and score goals, we just have to work together and gel at the right time.” said Canadian import defenseman Morgan McNeill following the win.
McNeill got the Wings rolling when he scored an unassisted marker on Hawks goalie Peter King with just over 6 minutes remaining in the opening period.
The Wings ended the opening frame leading by two goals, but then Lauton converted a play from Mathew Lothian and Mike Gainer, to put the Tribe on the board with the only goal of the second period, closing the gap to one.
The Redwings only need either a win, or a shootout win, or a loss by the Falcons to clinch first place and an automatic spot in the Premier League Grand Final Series in September.
The Wings outscored the Hawks 4-1 in the final period to earn the four goal win, and they also out shot the Hawks 38 - 13 with Andrew Glass earning the win in the Wings goal. King made 32 saves for the Tribe.
McNeill is a personable bloke and that has made him popular with both players and fans in South Australia. His sister Ainsley has been living in Adelaide for a few years and he had previously considered coming to visit and possibly play some hockey. “ I talked with Trevor (Walsh) about coming down last year, but I decided to stay back to play hockey, work ,and also coach a group of young players I’d been mentoring” he said. Instead he arrived in Adelaide following his 2016-17 Canadian season.
A hockey journeyman, McNeill has more suitcase stickers than Stompin Tom Connors. He grew up in Prince Edward Island, then left home and ventured out to Manitoba to play Major Midget, graduating on to Junior A with the Portage Terriers (Manitoba), Schreiber Diesels (Saskatchewan), Smith Falls Bears (Ontario), and the Fort Francis Lakers (Northern Ontario). After his junior career, he played for Ryerson University in Toronto, and then two years at Briercrest College and Seminary in Saskatchewan. Three years ago, following a short stint with Watertown (New York) in the Federal Hockey League, McNeill returned to Atlantic Canada to play Senior A hockey in New Brunswick, and last year he got to play in the prestigious Allan Cup National Senior Championship, hosted by his club the Bouctouche J.C's.
“I've been to lots of places playing hockey over the last decade, and my time playing here in Adelaide for both the Redwings and the Adrenaline has been a great experience. I really like the lifestyle here. It reminds me a lot of Canada, and especially my home province of P.E.I. All of the people I've met so far have been friendly and very welcoming.” McNeill said.
“ The atmosphere in the Wings’ dressing room translates over on to the ice. We have some talented players and also some hard workers, and we all mix well. “
“I think in order to beat those three teams (Falcons, Tigers, Blackhawks) in the playoff race, we just have to keep the game simple and fun. We've been doing that the last few weeks, getting back to simple hockey, and the game has been so much fun. I think we have a great team and I'm hoping we can pull it off”
