The Adelaide Blackhawks jumped to a 3 - 0 lead early into the second period and then never trailed in the scoreline, en route to a 6 - 2 victory over the Adelaide Falcons in the second game of Round 11 Senior A League play last Sunday at the Ice Arena.
Liam Yorke shot two goals to lead the Tribe in scoring with Troy Collins, Chris Stanton, Chad Wilson, and Paul Joyce all collecting single tallies in the win.
For the Falcons, Rob Bloomfield and Reece Boundy shot one goal each, with the team points leader Beth Kavanagh assisting on both goals.
The Falcons kept pecking away at the three goal lead and pulled to within one goal when Boundy converted the Kavanagh pass to beat Hawks goalie Charlie Wragg near the midway mark of the final period.
The Hawks then tightened their defense to hold the lead, before turning the tables and scoring three quick goals in the closing minutes to win by the four goal margin.
“We’ve always had some close matches with the Falcons and this win was no different” said Yorke after the game. “ I feel that we really put some good pressure on them, forechecking hard and we didn’t give them too much space. This created a lot of opportunities for us. Our defenders played a great game and having Charlie (Wragg) in net gives us confidence that he’ll make the big save when it’s needed. Overall it was a real team effort.” he said.
Yorke comes from an inline hockey background where he started playing at Blackwood when he was just 9 years old. After several years he then took some time off from playing, but decided to come back out to play in 2010, and it was shortly after his second playing stint that he was encouraged to give the game on ice a try by inline mate Jacob Thomas, now a fellow Hawks club member. Yorke is now in his fifth season on the ice, and his third with the Tribe.
His two goals in the win over the Falcons gives him 3 goals, to go with 3 assists for 6 points in eight games.
“Matts (Lothian - Coach), has been really great this season. He’s keeping things really simple and giving us a clear message, and that’s certainly set up a good foundation for us to build on.”
“We’re not looking too far forward in the season, all the teams are really even and there’s no easy games so we’re taking it one week at a time and sticking to the plan.” Yorke said.
The Hawks outshot the Falcons 29 - 25 with Wragg stopping 23 shots, while Falcons goalie Ian Hunter turned aside 23 shots at his end.
Both clubs will be back on the ice again on Sunday 25 June, first with the Falcons meeting the Tigers at 3:45pm, and then the Blackhawks and Jokers facing off at 5:15pm.
