TIGERS SCORE EARLY TO SHUTOUT BLACKHAWKS

June 15, 2017

Senior B League - Round 9  Game 2

Tigers 3 - Blackhawks 0

The Adelaide Tigers scored twice in the opening period and that was enough to come away with a 3 - 0 shutout win over the Adelaide Blackhawks in Senior B league action last Thursday at the Ice Arena.

Jeremy Klein scored two goals and assisted on the third, as the Tigers improved their B League record to 6 - 2 - 0 - 1 for 19 points and sole possession of second place on the ladder. Simon Kelly converted a pass from Klein and Mark Yeager in the second period to finish off the Tigers scoring.

Klein’s three point performance gives him a season total of 9 goals and 3 assists, and moves him into a first place tie in the division scoring race with team mate B.J. Letheby, both with 12 points.

Goalkeeper Justin Ruston blocked all 13 shots fired in his direction to record his sixth victory, and second shutout of the season. Blackhawks mainstay goalie Sam Poole blocked 22 of 25 shots at his end of the rink.

Defenseman Laurent Friederich was very happy with the shutout win, and says the Tigers are coming together following a stretch where many of the players had to familiarise themselves with one and other.

We had a positive start to the season, then we were a bit short of players and even coaches, and it showed in that we played below our level” said the Tigers defenceman.

“We’re basically a new team, with many of us not having played together before. We have some players from last season’s Tigers’ B1, B2, and few from C Division 1, so overall the team was a bit of patchwork but now that we’re getting to know each other, we’re coming together nicely”.

Friederich is no stranger to the sport having kicked off his ice hockey career at the age of 5 years in his childhood home of Morges, Switzerland, a small town of about 15,000 people, 60 kilometres from Geneva. He played on all the age representative teams until being assigned into the Swiss compulsory military service, where he served as a sergeant gunsmith. Following his stint in the military, he returned to the game to play beer league level hockey until 2008 when he moved to Australia with his young family.

He started playing in the Summer C Grade League in 2011 with the Flyers for two seasons and then another two seasons in B Grade with the Tigers B1. He also obtained his coaching accreditation certificate, so that he could coach his young son Jeremy and other aspiring young goalies in the IHSA junior system.

“Our goalie (Justin Ruston) has also been a big part of our success” said Friederich , “sometimes we play well and other times we run out of luck. We’ve lost a few games by one goal, so Justin has kept us in there at all times”.

Ruston currently sports a 91.28 save percentage putting him in the top three goalies in the division.

The Tigers and Blackhawks both return to B League action on Sunday 25 June, when the Tigers meet the Redwings in a 6:45pm clash, followed by the Blackhawks and Falcons at 8:15pm.
