Senior B League - Round 8 Game 2

Redwings 2 - Blackhawks 0

The Adelaide Redwings scored two second period goals, and goalie Johnny Cousins earned his second shutout of the season in a 2 - 0 victory over the Adelaide Blackhawks in Senior B League action earlier this week at Thebarton.

Following a scoreless opening period, Matt Brown and Jarred Lowe scored to give the Wings a two goal lead heading into the final period. From there the Wings defense and Cousins' goalkeeping closed the door to earn the win and improve their record to 6 - 1 - 1 for 20 points and first place on the ladder.

The shutout was the second of the season for Cousins, and the third by the Redwings in B League play, following shutouts over the Blackhawks in Round 5, and the Falcons in Round 6. The victory was the Wings seventh consecutive victory following a loss in the season opening round.

Sam Poole also made some big saves in goal for the Blackhawks, blocking a total of 23 of 25 shots.

Following the win, new recruit Lukas Mojzisek was full of optimism with the win and how the season is unfolding for his new club.

“Our win over the Blackhawks was really full on” said Mojzisek . “ Both teams played well. Our goalie Johnny (Cousins) played well, and his hard work in training is showing in the games. We have very strong defenders, and we pushed hard in the offensive zone, trying to keep the puck in their end. These efforts all paid off even though it would have been good to score more goals”.

“I’ve been playing on a few different lines since starting with the Wings, but I’m OK with that. Lately I’ve been enjoying playing centre, so I’m focused on winning face offs, especially in the offensive zone, and it’s paying off.”he added.

Mojzisek grew up playing hockey in the snow in his childhood home town of Ostrava, in the Czech Republic. He moved to Australia over three years ago, following 10 years living in New Zealand.

Currently the Australian Sales Engineer for New Zealand Tube Mills, Lukas started playing ice hockey again here in Adelaide with the Vipers in the C Grade Summer League in 2015.

“It’s my first year with the Redwings, and everyone is playing well. We have a really good atmosphere in the change room before and after games which is important for team spirit , and that is thanks to our president Chris Tait.”

The Redwings are back in action in the Senior B division on Thursday 15 June, when they meet the Falcons in an 8:15pm clash, followed by the Blackhawks and Tigers match at 9:45pm.
