HEARNE LEADS FALCONS TO WIN OVER JOKERS

June 3, 2017

Senior A League - Round 10 Game 2

Falcons 5 - Jokers 4

James Hearne scored a goal in each of the three periods to lead the Adelaide Falcons to an exciting 5 - 4 win over the Adelaide Jokers in Round 10 of the Senior A League last weekend at the Ice Arena.

“It was a good win on Sunday night, even though it's hard playing a late game (especially Sunday) but as a team we knew not to underestimate the Jokers and we'd have to work hard if we wanted the win.” said Hearne following the victory.

Teammates Andy Scott, and Rob Bloomfield rounded out the scoring for the Falcons, who boosted their season record to 4 - 4 - 1,  for a total of 14 points, just two points below the Tigers and Redwings at the top of the Senior A ladder.

Big Blue built up a 3 - 0 score line early into the second period, but then the Jokers' Andrew Smith, Lachlan Priest, and Nathaniel Benson all scored inside eight minutes of each other, tying the score 3 - 3 as both teams headed to the final frame.

In the final period Hearne scored his third of the night, and then Bloomfield gave them a two goal lead just past the midway point.

Jokers playing coach Sami Mantere gave his club one last chance of possibly levelling the score when he beat Falcons goalie Paul Cracknell with just over one minute showing on the clock, but the Falcons held on for the win.

Cracknell stopped 29 of 33 shots fired his way to earn the win for the Falcons, while Mathew Peterson stopped 17 in the Jokers goal.

Hearne is in his third season with the Falcons, after starting out playing inline in his youth. He has represented South Australia on the Senior Men’s Inline Team the last three years. Last Sunday's win over the Jokers has him optimistic about the Falcon’s chances in the finals.

“ At the moment our biggest strength is our defence, always solid and working hard to keep the pressure on the opposition” added Hearne.

“Andy Scott is a key player for us. He has great defensive skills with speed and power, and he has great skating and shooting abilities, making him a dangerous player in front of the opposition goal”.

The Falcons return to action on Sunday 18 June when they play the Blackhawks in an 8:30 pm match. The Jokers have a bye in Round 11, and will return to action on Sunday 25 June, when they meet the Blackhawks in a 5:15 pm game.
