RILLERA SCORES TWO TO LEAD WINGS TO VICTORY
IHSA Senior A League - Round 7 Game 1
Redwings 5 - Jokers 0
Jed Rillera scored twice and Jo Phillis registered a shutout to lead the Adelaide Redwings to a 5 - 0 Senior A League victory over the Adelaide Jokers last Sunday at The Ice Arena.
Jeff Pellerin, Nick Dukovac, and Dave Gal rounded out the other scoring for the Wings, who led 2 - 0, and 5 - 0 after the opening two periods.
Goalkeeper Phillis had a relatively easy night turning aside only 9 shots, but the win goes into the record books as a shutout, her second no-no in two weeks of IHSA action, following last weeks 4 - 0 win over the Falcons in the Senior B League.
Rillera is having a respectable start to the current season with 3 goals and 4 assists after six games, tied for the team scoring lead with Pellerin, both Wings' in the mix amongst the division’s top scorers.
“It's definitely gratifying when you can make a contribution on the scoreboard like I did in the win over the Jokers, but I was also really pleased with the effort each of our players contributed against them” said Rillera.
Rillera started playing inline hockey back in 1997 with the Northwest Wizards Inline Club, where he credits coaches Mickey Sutherland, Mark Alexander, and Trevor Walsh with getting him started, as well as house league coaches Travis and Sarah Black in the early days of his hockey journey.
After a few years away from the game, he went back to inline at the end of 2009 and played until end of 2015, including two years in Victoria (2010-2013). In 2015 he switched to ice hockey playing with the Lightning in the Summer C Grade competition, before being drafted by the Redwings last year.
“I’m feeling positive about our current four game win streak, and about how far the team can go this season. We’re a balanced team; with a good mixture of experience and youth, plenty of guys who can shoot, solid defence and of course Jo (Phillis) in net.
To go all the way, we’ll need to move forward as a unit better and that probably comes down to more communication on the ice. We’re still learning how each other plays.” he said from his workplace this week.”
The Redwings win, combined with a Tigers loss to the Blackhawks, moved the Wings into a first place tie with the Tigers, who have played one more game than the Redwings. The Jokers meanwhile have now lost their last four games and sit at the bottom in last place, after getting off to a promising start with a win and an overtime win in their season opening two games.
Senior A League play swings back into action again next Thursday 1 June with the Jokers facing the Tigers in a 6:15pm game, while the Redwings meet the Falcons in the late game starting at 8:45pm.
