WINGS BEAT TIGERS AS SENIOR A LEAGUE HEATS UP
IHSA Senior A League - Round 6 Game 1
Red Wings 6 - Tigers 5
The Adelaide Redwings handed the Tigers their first regulation game loss of the Senior A League season with a 6 - 5 win last week at the Ice Arena.
Jeff Pellerin continues his goal scoring ways for the Wings leading the attack with two goals and an assist, while Mark Godfrey, Chad McMurren, Tamir Dunning, and Tyson Boundy chipped in with single goals for the win.
Devan Seamans led the Tigers offense with two tallies, with singles going to Wes Pearson, Tim Moran, and Ryan O’Handley.
The victory improves the Redwings’ Senior A League record to 3 - 1 - 0 - 1, while the Tigers drop to 3 - 1 - 0 - 1, and are tied with the Wings in second place with 10 points, one point back of the front running Falcons.
The game was fast paced, with both sides deadlocked at 2 - 2 after the first, with the Wings holding a 5-4 advantage heading into the final frame.
Jo Phillis turned aside 27 of 32 shots to record the win in the nets for the Wings, with Russell Brewer stopping 20 of 26 for the Tigers.
“It was an intense game, both teams played hard, so it was great to come away with a win, and against the top team is just the cherry. I feel like we were very strong offensively and created a lot of strong scoring chances, and it paid off,” said Phillis after the win.
“This season with the restructuring of the divisions, it has taken a couple of games for our Senior A team to settle, but we’re starting to gel on the ice and in the locker room and it’s showing in our game play."
"We have a lot of talent and experience in our roster, with a diverse range of age, and that’s what I think you need to develop our sport successfully.”
Phillis played this past summer with the Adelaide Rush in the Australian Women’s Ice Hockey League, and although she says the season was tough at times playing for the winless Rush and facing upwards to 60 shots per game, she is finding the local Senior A League more of a challenge.
“The shots are harder and faster and I am down to roughly 20 shots per game, so the focus needs to be there. Reducing my goals against average is currently my goal.”
Following the recent win over the Tigers, the popular Wings goalie has a 3.40 GAA with an 85.22 Saves Percentage.
The Redwings will have a bye in the next round, however the Tigers will take to the ice again this Sunday 21 May when they play the Falcons in a 6:45pm Senior A League match, followed by the Jokers and Blackhawks at 8:15pm.
