EVANS SCORES WINNER AS TIGERS EDGE FALCONS
IHSA Senior B League - Round 5 Game 2
Tigers 3 - Falcons 2
Dan Evans fired the winning goal midway into the third period as the Adelaide Tigers defeated the Falcons 3 - 2 in Senior B League action last week at Thebarton.
Evans goal came after helping set up teammate Orren Prunkin to tie the game early into the third period, and improve the Gold and Black record to 3 - 2 to secure their spot alone in second place on the Senior B Ladder with 9 points, one win behind the first place Redwings.
Jeremy Klein added the third Tigers goals, with Jacob Symonds and Dave Castledine scoring for the Falcons.
The Falcons’ goalie Paul Cracknell was called upon to make several big saves and keep the score down as Tigers outshot the opponents 32-18. Justin Ruston blocked 16 of 18 shots in the Tigers goal to record the win.
“I picked up a loose puck and skated down the side and just over the blue line, I cut in toward the top of the circle and let a shot go, the Falcon’s goalie was screened and I managed a nice little five hole goal” said Evans on his winning goal.
Evans kicked off his long hockey career at the old Payneham rink as a 5 year old. From there he progressed up through the ranks and has represented South Australia in DeFris, Tange, and Brown national tournaments, as well as representing Australia twice on the National Junior team, both times going to Canada for tours.
He left the game in 2002 and moved to Townsville for work, but then in 2007 he moved to Brisbane and returned to the game, signing with the Southern Stars club in Queensland. Since returning to Adelaide in 2011 he has played for the Tigers, including being a member of the 2014 B Grade Premiership team.
“Our team this year has changed a bit. We have some new players and some players from both previous B Grade team, so we’re all getting used to the new dynamic. I think with a base of guys who have played on the same team for a few years it is fairly easy to work things out and even in the last two games I have seen an improvement in team synergy.
I think we have a good chance of stepping up and taking the championship this year if we keep working on our weaknesses and recognising our strengths.” he said.
The Tigers return to the ice in Senior B League play this Sunday 21 May at 3:45pm when they meet the Blackhawks, while the Redwings face off with the Falcons in the 5:15pm nightcap.
