FALCONS MAKE THE MOST OF CHANCES TO BEAT HAWKS
IHSA Senior B League - Round 4 Game 1
Falcons 8 - Blackhawks 5
The Falcons fired six goals in the third period to come away with an 8 - 5 win over the Blackhawks in Senior B League action Sunday night at Thebarton.
Both teams played good even hockey through the first two periods, deadlocked at 1 - 1 and 2 - 2 after the opening two periods, leading up to an exciting final 20 minutes, which saw the Falcons outscore their rivals six goals to three to claim the win.
"It was a big turnaround from the last time we played the Blackhawks" (5 - 0 loss -10 April), noted Falcons coach Steve Moeller. “In the first game we just couldn't capitalise on our opportunities, but this time around we made the most of them.”
"The first two periods were very close and we were lucky that a couple of penalties didn't cost us.
In the third period we really got going putting six past Sam (Poole) in what was our best period of the season so far.”
The victory improves the Falcons B League record to 1 - 3 for 3 points in the standings, but still a win back of the Blackhawks and Tigers, both tied in second spot with 6 points each.
Steve Panagaris, Reece Boundy, and Justin Finlay-Smith led the Falcons scoring with two goals each, with Christian Murdoch, and Meggie Ayris adding singles.
Tasmanian’ Paul Joyce continues to star for the Blackhawks’ scoring four goals and adding an assist, with line-mate Chris Stanton chipping in with the fifth marker.
"Steve (Panagaris) won the Falcons 'Hard Hat' player of the game, but it really was a great team effort and everyone could have been wearing the hat last night," said Moeller.
The Blackhawks outshot the Falcons 31 - 23, but former Australian National Team member Paul Cracknell made several big saves in the Falcons goal, blocking a total of 26 shots to record the win. Sam Poole blocked 15 of 23 for the Tribe.
Referee Mark Sunczyk handed out 28 minutes in penalties, 12 to the Falcons, and 16 minutes to the Blackhawks, including a 10 minute misconduct to the Hawks’ Nicholas Ruffino with only seconds on the clock.
The Falcons return to Senior B League play next on Sunday 14 May, when they play the Tigers in a 6:45pm encounter. The Blackhawks faceoff with the Redwings in the 8:15pm nightcap.
