AFTER SLOW START WINGS ROMP TO BIG WIN OVER BLACKHAWKS

May 5, 2017

IHSA Premier LEAGUE - Round 2 Game 1

Redwings 10 - Blackhawks 3

The reigning premiers’ Adelaide Redwings got off to their trademark slow start against the Blackhawks, before turning on the offence with four goals in the final two periods to skate to a 10 - 3 romp in Premier League play last Wednesday at Thebarton.

Aaron Grubb and Marcel McGuiness led the Wings with two goals each, while the rest of the scoring was spread around in a real team effort, with Tyler Leeming, Jake Riley, Remy McGuiness, Trevor Walsh, Steve Best, and new Canadian import Morgan McNeill rounding out the scoring.

Zach Boyle, Dave Fowler, and Theodore Fabijan all replied with single goals for the Hawks.

The Blackhawks took the play to the Redwings early, with Boyle beating goalie Andrew Glass to open the scoring less than four minutes into the game. But from that point onward the Wings never looked back, with Leeming and McNeill hitting the mark to give Big Red a 2 - 1 edge at the first break.                                       [Photos courtesy of Ian Thurston]

The Redwings widened the lead with goals from Riley, and Grubb early in the second, before the Tribe had a chance to narrow the gap when the Redwings captain Walsh was sent to the box for interference. The man advantage didn’t pay off at first, as (Remy) McGuiness scooped up a loose puck along the boards and then zigzagged his way into scoring position and beat Glen Forbes-White the Hawks goalie, for a shorthanded marker and 5 -1 Wings lead. Fowler did score on the power play a minute later to narrow the gap to three goals.

Then with older brother Remy in the penalty box, (Marcel) McGuinnes scored just as the two minute minor expired, when he drove hard through the slot and scored in the closing minute;  the Wings holding a comfortable 6 - 2 margin after two periods.

The Big Red show then outscored the Tribe 4 - 1 in the final frame, improving their first place record to five wins and no losses and a nine point lead over the Blackhawks and Tigers, both tied for second spot on the four team ladder with two wins each.

The Redwings’ new recruit McNeill comes to Adelaide from Prince Edward Island, Canada, and  brings a vast amount of experience to South Australian ice hockey, having played Junior A, University, and Senior A hockey in several provinces across Canada. He recently competed in the prestigious Allan Cup National Senior tournament prior to his trip down under.

McNeill will divide his time between the Wings and the Adelaide Adrenaline of the Australian Ice Hockey League.

The Redwings out shot the Hawks 39 - 24 with both goalies Glass, and Forbes-White making several big saves during the match.

The Redwings will play next on Wednesday 10 May at 9:30pm when they face off with the Falcons, in what is expected to be a real “barn burner” match, following the Falcons’ recent additions of  local Czech-Australian standout Josef Rezek and Canadian star Cameron Crithlow to their line-up.

The big match will be the second of two important Premier League matches with the Tigers / Blackhawks playing for a second place position on the ladder in an earlier 7:45pm curtain raiser.
