IHSA Senior A LEAGUE - Round 2 Game 1

Falcons 3 - Tigers 2

Reece Boundy rifled a bullet shot into the upper right hand corner of the goal to give the Adelaide Falcons an exciting 3 - 2 shootout win over the Tigers in Senior A League action Saturday night at Thebarton.

The victory was a big one for the Falcons who by beating the first place Tigers improved their record to 1-2-1 and moved them into a second place tie with the Jokers, both with five points, and just five points back of top spot.

Supporters were treated to a fast paced match as both teams played through a scoreless first period, and then two action packed periods, ending with the shootout to decide the winner.

Pete Phillips opened the scoring for the Falcons near the midway point of the second period, finishing off a nifty play from Nat Ayris and Captain Mitch Kelleher. The Tigers answered that goal when Ryan O’Handley tied the score with less than two minutes remaining in the period.

In the third frame, Rob Bloomfield put the Falcons ahead with a nice goal near the four minute mark, but Eric Lien levelled the score for the Tigers late in the period, when he converted a setup from Stu Henley and Jim Ryan, to send the game to a shootout.

Boundy’s winning goal was the fifth shot in the shootout, after both teams scored only once in four initial attempts.

“The Tigers are a very experienced bunch, so before the game we talked about a consistent effort and backing up each other and this proved to be the big difference from the previous game against them,” said Kelleher

“We spoke about defensive support and discipline, because they (Tigers) often control the puck in our zone, and it’s easy to get out of position. Tonight we limited their shots, and pounced on loose pucks and then set up our offense”.

“Senior A coach Darren (Stockburger) has set the tone for this team and Falcons Head Coach John Botterill has been laying down a great foundation, getting everybody on the same page.” added Kelleher

The Tigers outshot the Falcons 28 - 26, with both goalies Seb Woodlands of the Falcons and the Tigers’ Justin Ruston making a number of brilliant saves and keeping the game close. Kelleher was full of praise for Woodlands after the win.

“Seb was our superstar tonight. His vision and skill, and puck tracking skills are astounding and he has a good level of maturity for a young goaltender. He was the big difference tonight, especially in the shootout. He was a rock.”

The Falcons return to Senior A League action again on Sunday 30 April when they play the Jokers at 5:15pm. The Redwings meet the Blackhawks in the curtain raiser at 3:45pm.
