IHSA Senior B LEAGUE - Round 3 Game 1

Blackhawks 4 - Tigers 1

The Adelaide Blackhawks moved into a first place tie with two other clubs on the Senior B League ladder, following a 4-1 win over the Tigers last Thursday at The Ice Arena.

In a match that was much closer than the three goal margin indicates, the Hawks capitalised on their scoring chances and then got another solid performance from goalkeeper Sam Poole to steal the win, handing the Tigers their first loss in B League play.

Paul Joyce, playing in his first game for the Blackhawks led the offense with two goals, with Joel Osborn and Chris Stanton adding single tallies as the Tribe improved their record to 2 - 1 moving them into a three way tie in the standings with the Redwings and Tigers.

The Hawks led 1 - 0 and 3 - 1 after the opening two periods, but the Tigers outshot the winners 25 - 21 overall, with both goalies Poole for the Blackhawks, and Justin Ruston of the Tigers, making several big saves.

Joyce opened the scoring early in the game on an unassisted play, and then in the second period Osborn and Stanton both flipped backhand goals up high over Ruston to maintain the Hawks’ lead. Joyce then turned out the lights on the Tigers, shooting an empty net marker with less than a minute remaining for the 4 - 1 result.

Brenton Letheby scored the lone Tigers’ goal, slamming one home on a scramble play in front of the Hawks net, after taking the setup from Ryan Thurston and Josh Letheby.

“We played a good team game tonight, with good passing and some lucky bounces going our way and that led to a few scoring opportunities. The Tigers played a hard physical game and challenged us with their speed, but Sam (Poole) played great, shutting down a lot of their scoring chances,” said newcomer Joyce after the win.

Joyce recently joined the Hawks after playing last season in Tasmania with the Premiership winning Croatian Cougars in the Van Diemens League, where he lead the competition in points, and was named MVP.

“I’m new to the line-up, but I feel we have a great bunch and there’s lots of enthusiasm. I’m just focussing on keeping my feet moving to generate some passing lanes in the breakout. It’s early in the season but you can see we play as a unit and I’m happy to be a part of the team”, added Joyce.

The Hawks next game in the Senior B League will be Sunday 7 May when they play the Falcons at 8:30pm, with the Tigers meeting the Redwings in the earlier match at 7:00pm.
