SOUTH AUSTRALIA 2009 CENTENARY GOODALL CUP CHAMPIONS
IHA’s 2009 Centenary Goodall Cup Championship opened with host state Team South Australia losing a close encounter against arch rivals Team Victoria with a score of 3 – 2. Victoria’s Jamie Bourke with two goals, and Shane Hardy with one, tallied for Victoria while Josh Harding and Glen Foll notched one each for South Australia.
Victoria maintained the pace against Western Australia winning their second game of the Championship with a close 2 – 1 score. Dylan Moore and Jamie Bourke scored for Victoria with Sam Wilson scoring Western Australia’s lone goal.
In the third game, South Australia nearly lost the game after leading Western Australia 5 – 2 going into the third period. In the third, Western Australia narrowed the gap to 5 – 4 until South Australia scored their 6th goal after Western Australia pulled their goaltender in the dying seconds of the game. Team Captain, Greg Oddy and Ben Thilthorpe led the charge for South Australia with two goals each. Cass Delsar and Luke Thilthorpe notched singles.
In the second round, South Australia dominated Team Victoria with a resounding 4 – 0 defeat behind a Hat Trick performance from Team Captain, Greg Oddy. Cass Delsar notched the fourth in the final seconds of the game. The game would prove to be the “death knell” for Victoria later in the Championship.
If Western Australia was to have any hope of playing for the Gold Medal, Game 5 needed to be their turning point. Behind an outstanding performance by rookie goaltender Ayden Millward, Western Australia’s Koen Van Sprengel struck early in the first period to notch Western Australia’s first goal. In the second, Western Australia’s veteran, Dave Ruck scored to take the lead to 2 – 0. Victoria’s Andrew Belic and Jamie Bourke replied to tie the game at 2 – 2. Late in the third, Western Australia’s Dave Ruck struck again to give Western Australia a 3 -2 lead. With Victoria’s goaltender out of the net for a 6th attacker, Ricky del Basso gave Western Australia the victory with a final score of 4 – 2 and a opportunity to be in the gold medal game.
Game 6 was a must win for Western Australia for entry to the gold medal game. Victoria’s gold medal hopes were now in the hands of South Australia. Western Australia scored surprising three unanswered goals to take a 3 – 0 lead midway in the first period with goals from Dave Ruck, Paul Graham and Richard Garrad. Nick Clark finally put South Australia on the board ending the first period with a 3 – 1 score in favour of Western Australia. Western Australia increased their lead to 4 -1 in the second on a goal from Ricky del Basso. Sean Greer replied for South Australia to narrow the lead to 4 – 2. Minutes later Dave Ruck hit the twine to increase the lead to 5 – 2. A closely fought end-to-end third period had Corey Smith score South Australia’s final goal for the game. Robert Kelly replied for Western Australia recording a final score of 6 – 3 for Western Australia and entry to the gold medal game.
With a capacity crowd and expectations of a fast pace game, South Australia hit the ice with Captain, Greg Oddy scoring South Australia’s first goal early in the first period for a 1 – 0 period lead. In the second Cass Delsar increased the lead to 2 – 0. Early in the third Western Australia finally notched their first on a goal from Dave Ruck to narrow the lead to 2 -1. With South Australia dominating, Team Captain, Greg Oddy found the mark for South Australia’s third and final goal to give South Australia a final 3 – 1 score and the Centenary Goodall Cup Championship.

John McCrae Williamson Championships 2009
The John McCrae Williamson 11 Years and Under National Championship was held September 16th – 19th 2009 in Melbourne, Victoria. Competition was tough with six states represented: Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, Australian Capital Territory, South Australia and Western Australia.
South Australia was represented by Jake Riley, Connor Oxlad, Riley Thilthorpe, Jeremy Friederich, Joshua Letheby, Oscar Wilsdon, Marcel McGuiness, Mathew Gaskin, Aaron Grubb, Taylor Barker, Jack Poynter, Brandon Methot, Kate Tihema, and Henry Saxon. The Team was coached by Peter Ouzman, Managed by Melissa Oxlad, Captained by Kate Tihema and her Assistants Aaron Grubb and Marcel McGuiness.
All players received a National Championship participation medal for finishing in 5th place, while Brandon Methot (Goal Tender) was selected as the Most Valuable Player for South Australia. Overall our team did themselves proud, especially considering our youngest player was just 7 years old and that two players had only commenced ice hockey earlier this year through the Ice Blast Program. Our team’s play, attitude and sportsmanship were excellent. Whilst we only secured one win, it was a great improvement from 2008 and in a Championship with even stronger competition. In 2009, we won one game, lost one game in a penalty shootout, scored 8 goals, and narrowed our biggest losing margin. The celebration, tears and pride after our hard fought win was beautiful to see. Given junior ice hockey in South Australia is in a rebuilding phase, our performances can only continue to improve as our players gain more experience and confidence.
Thanks to our Team Officials, Peter Ouzman, Melissa Oxlad, Mick Riley, Ian Grubb and David Oxlad. Special thanks to all those who assisted with coaching including David Toms, Mick Riley, Brenton Letheby, and David Oxlad. Special thanks also to Robin and Theresa Tihema for their invaluable assistance with team catering and to Sami Mantere for making the effort to travel to Melbourne to inspire the players. Thanks also to the team parents for being so supportive.

ADELAIDE ADRENALINE 2009 AIHL CHAMPIONS
Third place AIHL Adelaide Adrenaline skated to 3 - 2 overtime victory over the league’s first place Newcastle Northstars at the 2009 AIHL Finals at Newcastle's Hunter Ice Skating Stadium on Sunday night.
The Adrenaline, who won a comfortable 6-1 semi-final victory over second place Melbourne Ice on Saturday night, met the Northstars, who recorded a 5 - 3 win in their semi-final game against the fourth place Gold Coast Blue Tongues.
Outshot 34 – 17 for the game and with the Adrenalin dominating play, the Northstars struck first with a dribbler between the pads of Adrenalin’s Olivier Martin from Northstars John Halverson on an assist from line mate Ray Sheffield to take the lead 1- 0 early in the first frame. Adrenalin’s Belgium import, Vincent Morgan, replied minutes later on a passing combination from Josh Harding and Mike Werner to tie the game at 1 – 1.
Adelaide took the lead mid-way through the 2nd frame when Mile Werner set up Team Captain, Greg Oddy to beat Northstars net minder, Matt Ezzy for a 2 – 1 score. With a man in the sin bin, and a controversial delay of game call on Greg Oddy late in the second, had Adrian Saul and Steven Kaye combining with John Halverson for his second of the game and a 2 – 2 tie to end the 2nd period.
Despite a number of power play opportunities in the third neither team were able to capitalize to take the lead resulting in the game going into sudden death overtime.
With the Adrenalin pressing Northstars goaltender Matt Ezzy right from the face-off with three shots in quick succession, a deflected puck from a Northstars defenseman’s skate gave the Adrenalin the 3 - 2 win and League Championship. Cass Delsar was awarded the goal with Josh Harding and Canadian import, Jeremy Beirnes recording the assists.
Cass Delsar was awarded Finals Series "Most Valuable Player" while Blue Tongues, Brad Smulders of the Gold Coast Blue Tongues was awarded the season’s MVP.
Adrenaline Captain Greg Oddy expressed the team’s relief in finally winning an AIHL play-off after three difficult years in succession prior to the 2009 season under the Avalanche brand and having last won the league’s championship honours in 2001.
Adrenalin Coach, John Botterill, stated:- “We were acutely aware that if we were to have optimum success the boys would have to play a discipline game. You can’t win games in the penalty box, especially against an experienced and talented team like the Northstars. The young players on the team displayed confidence and courage beyond my expectations. I am delighted that the team will have strong local talent for years to come. I couldn’t ask for a better performance.”
A ticker-tape parade is planned to take place for the team this Thursday at Adelaide’s Wellington Square.

Thanks to the dedication of our coaching group (Sami Mantere; Les Faynor and fitness coach Ryan McLeod) a small band of enthusiastic skaters were transformed into a competitive Ice Hockey Team.
It should also be noted that from our final player list of 16 - only 6 players were of Bantams age; we were blessed with 3 goal tenders; 5 Pee Wees along with 2 in-line players. Registrations and up skilling were a clear focus in the last couple weeks of training. Bodie Henderson (our final player listed) even flew from Pt Lincoln for a practice and the tournament!
The team was competitive at every outing; and moved to the winners circle with a thrilling overtime win against WA in our 3rd game of the round robin. We followed this up with a win against ACT; to finish in 3rd position going into the finals.
Vic were too strong in the semi-final (they ultimately won the tournament) and we just missed out on the bronze, with a loss to WA (2-1)
Highlights included the performance of Sam Gunter and Sam Maxwell (in-liners who moved to ice); Angus Tihema's goal scoring against WA; Sam O'Neill being awarded Most Valuable Goal Tender for the tournament; and Jake McLeod awarded the SA Most Valuable Player.
Thanks to all parents who helped out with the many off ice activities; to all of our coaches and to John & Julie Bolton in team management support."
